Purim Baskets: Themes & Ideas

4e303261e7ed9c2b11bd41196d35caf4.jpeg

I'm a very 'just in case' type of person. I always pack extra things 'just in case', buy things 'just in case' and I'm always on look out for ideas and inspirations 'just in case'. Even though I don't really have any special event, party or occasion to plan for, I totally imagine it in my head as I checkout party planning websites and browse through party favors magazines.

Since I do that all the time, I was thinking that I should share my ideas and thoughts with you people out there, especially since Purim is just around the corner. Mishloach Manot giving is a big deal, you know it and although you don't want to, admit it! Buying the Purim gifts may be a hassle for some but when you have a place to do all your Purim shopping, it really shouldn't be.

Firstly, Oh! Nuts offers it all. It's the one-stop-shop website where you will find Purim novelty toys, Purim candy, nuts, dried fruit, chocolates and Purim gift boxes. Too lazy, tired, impatient, busy or overwhelmed? Oh! Nuts is your answer! We ship most of our baskets nationwide in a professional and reliable manner. Now back to Purim basket themes! Even if you make your own gifts, here are some ideas:

The Spongebob Squarepants Purim Theme is really cute. Dress your kid/s up in yellow pants and shirt and get a spongebob mask to go with it. Your Mishloach Manos can consist of yellow candy (see Oh! Nuts section of Yellow Themed Candy and Chocolate) as well as spongebob color-a-cookie, spongebob large lollipops and yellow flowers.

The Dog/Puppy/Animal Purim Theme seems to be popular this year. We offer animal candy lollipops, animal chocolate lollipops and licorice scottie dogs. Our newest item that we offer is Color-A-Cookie and we have Blues Clues and Scooby Doo for the dog theme as well as Winne-the-Pooh!

Firefighter/Fireman Purim Theme: this theme is very cute and fun to plan for. Some ideas for Mishloach Manos are Quick Blast Fireman Candy Spray, Fireman candy, cinnamon lava balls (hot n spicy), red colored candy like Jordan almonds, jelly beans, licorice and hard candy or soft candy. A fireman suit and helmet from a cheap party website or party supply store completes your fireman theme!

Baby/Kid Purim Theme - with the saying 'tinok shel bais raban' you can work alot with this theme! Get a bassinet basket and fill with a cute, plush teddy bear, milk chocolate booties, pacifier coated candy, pacifier twisted candy and baby flash pop as well as a bottle of water or grape juice!
For some reason, kids love dressing up as babies with the bibs and pacifiers so you shouldn't have a problem with costumes!!

Ocean/Sea Purim Theme- Your Mishloach manos can be so classy with the ocean theme of blue and whites. For example items such as milk chocolate fish, jelly fish, bubble monsters, jelly dolphins gummies, shark squirter candy and fish candy toy fill your basket.

That's for now but watch for more Purim Mishloach Manot ideas!

Purim 2008: Graggermania

WM_Double%2520Noisemaker%2520Wooden%2520Grogger.jpeg

There are two holidays on which we spin: on Chanukah it is customary to play with a dreidel, and on Purim we spin the gragger. The dreidel is spun from the top and the gragger is spun from the bottom. Ever wonder why the dreidel is spun from the top by a spindle which becomes wider and why the gragger is spun from the bottom by a stick leading to a larger head?

In the Purim chronicle, when the Jewish people learned of the total destruction Haman planned for them, they undertook a bottom-up effort and fasted and prayed to change their fate. In contrast, the Chanukah miracle took place when many Jews sided with the Greek point of view and did not join the Maccabee fight. It was God's top-down merciful intervention that saved the day. Setting a dreidel in motion by twirling it from above recalls Hashem's positive role in the Chanukah miracle.

A Purim gragger, also called "ra'ashan" (noisemaker) is used when Haman's name is mentioned during the reading of the Megilla. As a tradition, we spin the gragger to blot out the evil advisor-to-the-king's name. When Haman's name is mentioned in the Megilla, the congregation makes great effort to make a racket! Hisses, feet stamping, hooting, noisy table banging, clanking and grinding of graggers fill the synogogue and general chaoes ensues for a span of 60 seconds. Then there's silence, as the megillah reader continues reading the verses of the megillah. The scene repeats itself countless times, everytime the congregants reveling in the noise.

Some people can't stand the din the graggers and rattles make, but I just love the craziness that goes on in those few seconds after which there is pin-drop silence. The kids, especially have a great time!

For those who are not familiar with graggers, the gragger is sounded by taking hold of the bottom and yanking it around. There are many different styles of graggers made out of wood, metal and plastic in various designs, colors, shapes and sizes. Oh! Nuts carries a few types of graggers; one noisemaker is actually a candy-filled gragger! Check out this wooden gragger, this tin grogger and handpainted gragger with haman on the top.
These items are fun Purim gifts to distribute to kids - (if not adults as well)! or to include into Purim Baskets Mishloach Manot.

Passover 2008: Food Phenomenon (Part I)

soup.jpg

Passover is the Festival for freedom for Jews worldwide. If so, then why is it that we feel so restricted when it comes to this wonderful holiday? Maybe I'm wrong but part of the holiday atmosphere is clouded by worries of, we can't eat this passover food and we can't eat that. But who says that that is the case? If you're one of the many that eat gebrokts, mish (mix foods), eat kitnios or even none you have NOTHING to be concerned about. There are so many foods that one can prepare for the Pesach holiday that it just boggles the mind.

Here is a recipe for Charoset, the traditional food that we eat on Pesach. Its texture reminds us of the mortar used by the slaves in Egypt to build.

1 cup of walnuts
1 granny smith green apple
2 tsp. cinnamon
2 tsp. sugar
red wine to moisten

Chop the nuts and apples to the consistency you want (a food processor can be used). Sprinkle with spices, and moisten with wine. Keeps three days in refrigerator.
