Did you know that the ancient Greeks chewed on a substance formed from the resin contained in the bark of the mastic tree? Grecian women chewed mastic gum for its sweet flavor and to whiten their teeth. Our modern version of gum evolved from a chicle-based gum brought to the United States in the early 1860s.

Chicle is derived from the milky juice of the sapodilla tree that grows in tropical rain forests. The demand for chicle gum grew like wild fire, and as a result, the chicle suppliers couldn’t keep up with the demand. Manufacturers had to get creative and tried to come up with synthetic gum bases. An Ohio dentist by the name of William F. Semple is credited with the first patent for our modern-day chewing gum in 1869. The original goal of his product wasn’t for chewing pleasure, but to create a product for gum stimulation and to exercise the jaw.
