Dark Chocolate Covered Orange Peels

The chocolate is good quality as long as it is fresh, but there is very little orange peel inside. I prefer the dark chocolate covered orange peel strips version, where there is a better balance between the sweet chocolate and the tart orange peel. These are much cheaper though, and a good bargain alternative.

Great Dark Chocolate

We originally bought these for gift baskets, but ate through both bags ourselves! Irresistable. Honestly orange, with just a hint of tang to balance out the cocoa.

Smooth, satisfying dark chocolate, a bit sweeter and a lot creamier taste than most dark chocolates, great "mouth feel." My one "sorta" critique is that I'd expected a little more orange peel inside. These have a clearly detectable orange taste but I'd guess the orange is about 1/4 of the weight. My past experience w/choc orange peel it's been around 50%, so this is more orange-y chocolate than chocolate-y orange. However, my previous experiences with choc covered candied orange peel have cost me 2 to 4 times as much by weight. Plus, the small size allows you to take a small taste when that's all you want rather than a minimum of the relatively large pieces that are usually available (I'd estimate that the pieces are about 1/5 to 1/8 the size of the usual choc covered orange peel. Each of these is about the size of 2-3 M&Ms whereas this type candy is usually sold in pieces about 1/3 to 1/2 the size of an old fashioned wooden pencil). Further, per above, the chocolate's extra bit of sweetness offsets somewhat the reduced amount of candied orange peel, so these end up being just a tad sweeter than most other versions I've had, though the sweetness comes mostly from the chocolate rather than mostly from the orange peel. In some ways, these are preferable to the higher priced versions. Obviously, they're a super bargain by comparison at 1/3 to 1/2 the cost per lb. The smaller individual pieces make them even more of a bargain. The "high priced" versions might have 35-45 pieces or so in a pound, so even if you eat them for tiny sweet-tooth pleasures, your 1-lb purchase disappears pretty fast. There are probably at least a couple hundred little individual pieces in a pound of these, so if you're someone who can enjoy just a bit of sweetness after a meal or for a random taste bud treat, these will last you 4 or 5 or more TIMES as long, and at around 1/3 the cost-per-lb, it means your $-expenditure should keep your tongue happy for roughly 8-10 times longer, and this is not an exaggeration. A lb. of the large-portion, higher priced version might last me 4 or 5 days if I'm careful, but I opened a 1-lb bag of these about 10 days ago, have been snacking on them lightly several times every day, and I've used up only about 25% of the bag. Yes, I'm consuming them at a slightly lower rate per day, as far as weight goes, but that's because of the convenient size. My taste buds are every bit as satisfied. If I want a 3rd or 4th snack from the higher priced ones on a particular day, I'd be forced to eat around 1/2 oz or so minimum by grabbing a single piece. With these, I can grab 3 or 4 of the pieces, & satisfy my sweet tooth every bit as thoroughly with only a very small fraction of an oz. Though I haven't had the chance to offer them to guests yet, it occurs to me that, again, they are a yummy and somewhat unusual treat, and unlike the more expensive competition, they won't run out quickly as guests snack at them in minimum quantities that are "less gluttonous" than the usual shape and size that's available.
