In our research we found that popcorn as we know and love it today made its debut around 1820 and was first called ‘pearls’ or ‘nonpareil.’ By 1848, the word “popcorn” was included in John Russell Bartlett’s Dictionary of Americanisms. It got its name from, you guessed it, the popping sound it made as it cooked. Over time, people starting experimenting with different sweet, salty and sour flavors to add to popcorn, resulting in the myriad of flavors available today.
